The prostate is a male organ located between the bladder and the penis. The prostate’s main function is to produce fluid that protects and enriches sperm. It also acts like a railroad crossing for ejaculation and urination as it surrounds the urinary tube (the urethra).
The prostate can be felt during a finger rectal examination. A young male’s prostate is typically about the size of a walnut but it can grow to many times this size in many men as they get older. Besides getting larger, the prostate also has a tendency to produce the most common type of cancer in men.
